How Many Porta Potties Do You Need? A Complete Guide for Atlanta Events

One of the most common questions we get at Patriot Portables — and one that event planners, homeowners, and construction managers all eventually have to answer — is a simple one: how many porta potties do I actually need?
Get it wrong in one direction and you're dealing with long lines, unhappy guests, and potential code violations. Get it wrong in the other direction and you've paid for units you didn't need.
Here's the complete guide from our Metro Atlanta portable restroom team.
The Basic Formula
The widely used industry standard for event porta potty sizing is:
1 portable restroom per 50 guests for events lasting up to 4 hours.
That's the starting point. From there, you adjust based on several factors.
Adjustments to the Basic Formula
Event Duration
Longer events mean more restroom use per guest.
Up to 4 hours: 1 unit per 50 guests
5–8 hours: 1 unit per 40 guests (or add roughly 1 additional unit per 3-4 hours beyond the initial 4)
Full-day events (8+ hours): 1 unit per 30-35 guests
Alcohol Service
Events with an open bar or significant alcohol service increase restroom usage by 20-25%. If you're serving alcohol at your event, increase your unit count accordingly.
Example: 200 guests, 6-hour event with open bar — Base: 200 ÷ 50 = 4 units; Duration adjustment (6 hrs): +1 unit = 5 units; Alcohol adjustment (25%): +1.25 = round up to 7 units
ADA Accessibility
For any permitted public event in Metro Atlanta, at least one ADA-compliant portable restroom is typically required. For private events, we strongly recommend including an ADA unit to ensure all guests are accommodated.
ADA units count toward your total restroom count, so you can include them in your calculation rather than adding them on top.
Food Service
Events with food trucks or catering benefit from hand washing stations positioned near food service areas. These don't replace porta potties in your count — they're additive.
Temperature and Weather
Hot weather increases hydration and therefore restroom use. For summer events in Metro Atlanta, consider adding 10% to your unit count if temperatures will be above 85°F.
Construction Site Guidelines
For job sites, OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.51 sets the requirements:
1 toilet per 10 workers for an 8-hour shift
For larger crews working 10-12 hour shifts, increase proportionally
High-traffic phases of construction (more workers on site) may require temporary additions to your unit count
Long-term construction rentals from Patriot Portables include scheduled weekly servicing — so you're not managing this yourself.
Don't Forget Hand Washing Stations
Hand washing stations are a separate consideration from porta potties. We recommend:
1 hand washing station per 50-75 guests at events with food service
1 hand washing station bundled with every 2-3 porta potties at large construction sites
At least 1 hand washing station at any outdoor event where guests will be eating
